๐ฆ Nara Park Travel Guide – Meet the Friendly Deer of Japan!
Planning a trip to Osaka or Kyoto? Looking for a unique day trip destination in Japan?
Let me introduce you to Nara Park (ๅฅ่ฏๅ
ฌๅ, Nara Kลen) — a magical place where you can walk among freely roaming deer and explore beautiful temples surrounded by nature.
๐ What is Nara Park?
Nara Park is a massive public park located in Nara Prefecture, in the Kansai region of Japan. Established in 1880, the park spans over 500 hectares, making it one of the largest and most historic parks in the country.
Within the park, you’ll find some of Japan’s most famous cultural landmarks:
-
Tลdai-ji Temple (ๆฑๅคงๅฏบ)
-
Kasuga Taisha Shrine (ๆฅๆฅๅคง็คพ)
-
Kลfuku-ji Temple (่็ฆๅฏบ)
But what truly sets Nara Park apart is its over 1,000 wild deer that roam the park freely.
These deer are considered messengers of the gods in the local Shinto religion and have been protected for centuries. Today, they’re even designated as a Natural Monument of Japan.
๐ฆ Highlights of Nara Park
1. ๐ฅ Feeding Deer with Shika Senbei
One of the most fun things to do in Nara Park is buying Shika Senbei (deer crackers) and feeding the deer!
You can easily find vendors near the park entrance selling these special treats for around ¥200–¥300.
๐ฆ Some deer will bow to you before taking the cracker – it’s absolutely adorable!
๐ Just be cautious – they can get a bit pushy when they spot food in your hand!
2. ๐ฏ Tลdai-ji Temple – The World’s Largest Wooden Building
Located inside the park, Tลdai-ji is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and houses the Great Buddha (Daibutsu, ๅคงไป) — a colossal bronze statue standing over 15 meters tall.
It’s a breathtaking experience and a must-see for anyone interested in Japanese history or Buddhist culture.
3. ⛩️ Kasuga Taisha Shrine – A Spiritual Path Lined with Lanterns
Another iconic spot in Nara Park is Kasuga Taisha, a stunning Shinto shrine famous for its vermilion columns and hundreds of stone lanterns. The peaceful and sacred atmosphere offers a beautiful contrast to the playful deer.
4. ๐ฟ Scenic Walks & Peaceful Moments
Nara Park is incredibly spacious and serene. Even just taking a walk through the tree-lined paths while watching the deer interact with visitors is a healing experience.
While the deer are used to people, remember not to get too close or startle them.
๐ How to Get to Nara Park
Nara Park is very accessible from both Osaka and Kyoto.
From Osaka:
-
JR Nara Line: Osaka Station → Nara Station (approx. 50 minutes)
-
Kintetsu Nara Line: Get off at Kintetsu Nara Station (approx. 40 minutes)
From Kyoto:

-
Kintetsu Nara Line: Get off at Kintetsu Nara Station (approx. 35 minutes)
From either station, it’s about a 10–15 minute walk to the park.
⚠️ Important Tips for Visiting Nara Park
